Am I Having a Spiritual Awakening or Going Crazy?

A spiritual awakening is not a mental health crisis, though it can feel like one. The key difference is that awakening expands your awareness outward while a breakdown collapses it inward, and knowing which one you are experiencing changes everything about how you respond.

I hear this question more than any other. Someone reaches out, usually apologizing for how strange they are about to sound, and then describes symptoms that could fill a textbook on either topic. Sudden sensitivity to noise and light. Vivid dreams that feel more real than waking life. A sense that everything they believed about the world has shifted overnight. They want to know if they are losing their mind or finding something deeper.

Here is what I have learned from working with people in this exact spot. In a genuine awakening, you typically gain new perception. You notice things you did not notice before. Colors seem brighter. You pick up on the emotions of people around you. You feel a pull toward meaning, toward purpose, toward something larger than your daily routine. The confusion is real, but underneath it, there is a quiet knowing that something important is happening.

In a mental health crisis, the experience tends to move in the opposite direction. Instead of expanded awareness, you feel increasingly disconnected. Daily tasks become impossible rather than simply less interesting. The confusion does not have a quiet knowing underneath it. It just has more confusion.

That said, this is not an either/or situation. Awakening can trigger genuine anxiety. It can disrupt your sleep, your appetite, your relationships. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, if you cannot function at work or care for your basic needs, please talk to a mental health professional. There is nothing unspiritual about getting clinical support while you are also going through a spiritual opening.

What I tell people is this: you do not have to choose between the medical model and the spiritual one. They can coexist. I have worked with clients who were seeing a therapist and working with me at the same time, and that combination gave them the most complete support. The therapist helped with the nervous system. I helped with the bigger picture of what was actually happening to them.

If you are reading this and nodding along, you are probably not crazy. You are probably waking up. But you do not have to figure that out alone. Reach out, ask for help, and let someone who has been through it walk beside you while you find your footing.
